Homelessness Australia calls for national strategy

St John’s Youth Services supports Homelessness Australia’s call for a national homelessness strategy.

Since 2013, the Australian Government has failed to commit to an ongoing funding program that has seen Specialist Homeless Services struggle to plan for ongoing and effective service delivery.  Failure to invest in Specialist Homelessness Services will see almost 300,000 Australians each year without access to high quality homelessness services skilled to assist them in their hour of need.

Housing that is affordable to those on the lowest incomes, and the support needed to both access and keep it, is the foundation of an effective approach to homelessness.  Currently, there is a severe shortage of social housing and the private rental market is becoming more and more inaccessible for people on low incomes or income support.  The current increase in homelessness is directly related to the lack of safe and secure affordable housing.

The Homelessness Australia Position Paper includes recommendations in 10 key areas including calling on the Commonwealth Government to develop a National Homelessness Strategy and a National Affordable Housing Strategy and to continue to commit to and increase resourcing of the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness and the National Affordable Housing Agreement.
